On March 19, a Facebook user named Julius Zimwanda Mithi posted on his page that 1,152,091 Malawian eligible registered voters have been deleted from National Registration Bureau and Malawi Electoral Commission systems. The post claimed that the information was from reliable sources. The claim in the post was later replicated by others and got comments indicating people's concerns about the possibility of failure to vote during the forthcoming election, especially among those allegedly 1,152,091 deleted voters.

Rating Justification

iVerify Malawi verified the information that 1,152,091 eligible voters have been deleted in the National Registration Bureau and Malawi Electoral Commission systems and determined that it is false. It is true that some records are missing in the voter register and MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa acknowledged the same in a statement released on 14 March 2025 and in an interview with The Daily Times but the number 1,152,091 is false. While acknowledging that during the recent voter transfer exercise less than 10 names were missing from the preliminary list used for transfers, Mwafulirwa said the registration details are intact and anyone who registered will be able to vote. MEC spokesperson said no name has been deleted from the MEC system. MEC is currently conducting a quality check and iVerify Malawi will continue to update Malawians on the missing records in the voter register, but based on the evidence gathered the figure 1,152,091 is false.
