Malawi Defence Force officer indeed confiscated the Nation Publications Limited reporter’s camera

The reporter Kelly Livimbo and the Malawi Chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Malawi) confirmed that indeed Livimbo's camera was confiscated, and it had to take the intervention of MISA Malawi for the MDF officer to return the camera.

Claim

Confiscation of NPL reporter's camera by MDF security officer

Rating Justification

iVerify Malawi verified the content and determined that it is true. To arrive at this verdict, iVerify Malawi interviewed the reporter Kelly Livimbo and used the statement that the Malawi Chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Malawi) released on the matter. Livimbo said the MDF officer confiscated his camera and claimed that he had taken pictures of the ballot papers, yet he did not capture such details. MISA Malawi says the inspection of the photos by both the military and MISA Malawi showed that no pictures of the actual ballots were taken by the reporter. The chapter also says the camera was handed over to NPL without any pictures deleted.
